Me and Michael

So, you know -- yes, I was also sad when Michael Jackson died, as most people were (except the ones who were all bitchy about how the death of one of the most globally famous entertainers in history was, heaven forbid, dominating the news cycle for a few days!!!), but I didn't feel the loss very viscerally, having been a casual fan at best. In following up on his life and career after the fact, I was glad to see that all my favorite MJ songs were ones he'd written himself ("Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" and '"Wanna Be Starting Something" would be my top two) and not ones that had been written for him (like "Thriller," which is fine, but probably wouldn't be a song everyone would remember without the video and the killer dance routine). However, I also learned just the other day that Thomas Dolby originally wrote "Hyperactive!" with Michael Jackson in mind; apparently MJ had liked "She Blinded Me With Science" enough that he contacted Thomas Dolby about writing him a song, but then never followed through. Man oh man, I hope there's a demo of that in the Jackson vault.

Anyway, ages ago I made a Michael Jackson mash-up, taking "Billie Jean" and putting it on top of the German art-rock band Can's "Splash" (cramming it into a 7/8 time signature in the process). It's not my best mash-up by any means, but it's sort of interesting. You can download it here, if you are so inclined.

I would remember "Thriller" just for Vincent Price.

Sure, but if you wouldn't remember it without him, then how good a song is it?
