Comments: Tell me more about this earth emotion you call "liking Maroon 5"

Oh, them's ain't nothing. The 1979 Best New Artist Grammy went to disco act A Taste Of Honey, who had a big (one-) hit with "Boogie Oogie Oogie." Their next three albums went nowhere.

Who'd they beat out? Just a few no-talent, no-staying-power acts called Toto, the Cars, and Elvis Costello.

> ...(1988 is particularly awful)...

Hey, Terence Trent D'Arby was a talented mofo. He certainly wasn't humble about it, though.

If the Oscars used the same sort of criteria as the Grammys, Home Alone would have won Best Picture.

Ah...the web page I was reading only had the nominees listed as far back as 1980. Whoo, that was a particularly regrettable choice, that 1979 award.

Yup. Even without the gift of hindsight, the Cars' first album was a frickin' hit machine, and My Aim Is True was (and still is) just astounding.

I just got off a 28-city tour opening for the British artist Imogen Heap. She's one of the Best New Artist nominees this year (even though her first album came out in 1998). Unfortunately, she's up against Carrie Underwood, Corinne Bailey Rae, and (gag) James Blunt.

Nothing will ever top 1977.

I must be the only person on the planet who actually likes Hootie and the Blowfish. *shrug*

Robert Goulet beat out the Four Seasons and Peter, Paul, and Mary. Bobbie Gentry beat out Jefferson Airplane. Jose Feliciano beat out Cream. In 1969 Crosby, Stills & Nash beat out both Chicago AND Led Zeppelin. And in 1970 the Carpenters beat out Elton John.

The mind reels.

Anyway, the LA Times site has all the nominees in all the categories, which is nice. Wikipedia doesn't.
