This was timely, as just this morning I was wondering how far back this use of "drama" (meaning specifically "things going badly, possibly in a rather soap-operatic fashion, in a relationship") went.

Oh yes. I only missed Stamford last year because I stayed home to work on my writing samples for the Daily Show, who then, against all logic, did not hire me. Bah.

Um, I checked some citations and I don't see anything in this sense (i.e., not an actual stage-play sense) before 1993. But I'd bet that could be antedated pretty easily. Go forth and hit the full-text databases, people!
