Another quick (not especially Landesman-related) sidebar on the Landesman flap. Here's an excerpt from NY Times Magazine's editor Gerald Marzorati defending Landesman in Slate:
It seems unbelievable to Shafer that there could be dozens of active stash houses without the police busting them all. Substitute "crack houses" or "whore houses": still unbelievable? As Landesman writes, the police often can't tell slaves from everyday hookers, and so are not looking for them.
Hey, look, it's an unintentional argument for legalizing prostitution! If you can't tell the difference between women who are working in the sex industry of their own free will, and ones who have been coerced into it, then...why don't we license sex workers already? Might that not be of some assistance?
Of course, I'm never going to understand our country's sex laws. You're allowed to pay two people to have sex while you film them, but you're not allowed to pay someone to have sex with you. Can't you get around the whole problem of prostitution being illegal if you just call the prostitute a "model", and set a camera up in the room?
Posted by Francis at 01:00 AMI think you may be onto something with the porno/prostitution loophole. You still have the problem of people who want to pay for sex but not have anyone know about it (much less watch it on video), though.
