Hi there! Yarnivore isn't a Brooklyn yarn store any longer. I closed it in September. If you'd like to find lovely natural fiber yarns and you are in Brooklyn, I recommend The Yarn Tree or Stitch Therapy. If you are in Manhattan, you might try Downtown Yarns, a shop that's always a pleasure.

I'm likely to reopen a yarn store in the future sometime; I enjoyed running Yarnivore. I only closed because I'd had a very personally stressful spring and summer in 2005. If you'd like to be on my mailing list, please use the link at left to sign up. I'll only send mail if I start teaching knitting classes again or if I begin to plan a new yarn store.

If you'd like to see what I'm up to, you can check on my blogs. The fiber-related blog is Citizen Skein; the not-necessarily-fiber-related blog is Miles of Yarn.

Be well --

Friends of Yarnivore:

I’m writing to you with sad news. After giving the matter a great deal of thought, I have decided to close the doors on Yarnivore.

Some of you who have become closer friends over the last year have been aware that my mother has been ill, and that I found that very difficult this summer. In general, the last few months have been very hard on me, and I have come to feel that I will be better off personally if I do not also have to maintain the yarn store. Of course I am sad, but I think this is the right decision for me.

I’m going to have a small going-out-business sale to help recoup my investments, and I’d love to see you. Right now I have sweater quantities of most of the yarns I have carried, as well as needles and bags and spindles and books and magazines, and to start out, everything in the store is 30% off. I’ll be here this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Below are the hours I’ll be here. If these aren’t convenient for you, please drop me a line and let me know, since I may be able to meet you here some other time.

Friday, September 23rd: 2-8pm
Saturday, September 24th: 2-6pm
Sunday, September 25th: 2-6pm

Thanks for your support over the last year. I’ll let you know next week what I still have in stock, and what hours I’ll be in the space. I hope to see many of you soon.

My personal plans are to do freelance copyediting, and perhaps to teach some knitting classes from home after I’ve had a break from the yarn store.

Love to you all,

Rose

I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day! The store will reopen with regular hours on Wednesday, September 7th.

I've been knitting on a shop sample sweater of Autumn House Farm yarn that I'll have in the store in September. I'm working it up in Knitty's Rosedale pattern, and it's looking fantastic.

Feel free to drop me a line if you'd like; I'll be updating the blog from time to time, and I'll send out a note when I've got a new class list up for September/October. Now that my mom's surgery has taken place, things will be more settled, and I'm eager to move into the fall knitting season with all of you.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

The store is at 325 Gold Street, near the intersection of Flatbush and Myrtle.

Regular store hours are:

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: 12-9pm
Saturday and Sunday: 12-6pm

What are you working on as the weather warms up? I’ve got the wonderful zigzag-knitted W tank-top from Knitty’s summer 2005 issue on my needles, how about you? Come show it off at a Friday evening knitting session!

Yarnivore Summer Hours begin June 1st

Wednesday and Thursday: 12-7pm
Friday: 12-9pm (TGIF Knitting Group meets every Friday evening)
Saturday and Sunday: 12-6pm

Class Schedule Update Coming Soon

I’m sorry that I haven’t been able to post a class schedule for the summer. I haven’t known when I’ll need to travel to Louisiana to spend time with my mom, who’s been ill, but that’s getting sorted out and I’ll be able to post a class list soon.

New Inventory in the Works!

I met some terrific new vendors at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival, and renewed connections with others. Roving is being processed from a couple of fleeces I bought, Autumn House Farm is having some of their lovely yarn dyed in the colorways I chose, and the Bosworths are putting the finishing touches on a few of their lovely handspindles. I can’t wait to see it all!

Mermaid Parade Knit-Out

Saturday, June 25th is the day of the Mermaid Parade on Coney Island, and it’s always lots of fun.

If you’ve never been before and don’t know what to expect, here’s some reportage from my husband, Francis, from last year’s parade.

I’m telling you about it because Yarnivore’s storefront will be closed for the afternoon in observance of this fine Brooklyn event, and I’ll be at the parade, which begins at 2pm. Before and after the parade, however, is an opportunity for us to take our knitting for a seaside jaunt! I’ll have more details (where to meet, etc.) closer to the date. In the meantime, think about what to wear! The more outrageous, the better, of course.

Hope to see you soon!

The store is at 325 Gold Street, near the intersection of Flatbush and Myrtle.

Summer store hours are Wed and Thurs, 12-7pm, Fri 12-9pm, and Sat-Sun, 12-6pm.

Intro to Cables -- 2 sessions, $40
You’ll learn to handle a cable needle, how to twist your stitches on purpose, and how to follow both charted and written-out pattern directions for cabled stitch patterns. Bring in any cabled patterns you’ve been wanting to make, and we’ll look over them in class, too!

There is still room in the introduction to cable knitting class, and in the beginning spinning class. If you know someone who'd like to learn to knit but has been putting it off, I'm offering a one-afternoon crash course on April 23rd from 1-5pm that will get them started with the basics.

In other Yarnivore news, I now have needles from Inox and Clover, in sizes 5-10.5, in single-pointed, double-pointed, and circular styles. If there's anything you want to learn that isn't on the class schedule, I'm happy to do a private lesson for you, just send e-mail and we can discuss the details!

I'm also teaching a couple of classes for the Church of Craft.
You're always welcome to come hang out at the TGIF knitting group, every Friday evening from 5:30-9pm.

The days are getting longer already! It's still cold, though, and it will be for a couple of months yet, so we're still in the heart of knitting season.

I'll have a new list of classes up in about a week that will cover March and April, including some classes that haven't been on the schedule before. We'll be having our first guest instructor, too!

If there's anything you want to learn that isn't on the class schedule, I'm happy to do a private lesson for you, just send e-mail and we can discuss the details!

I'm also teaching a couple of classes for the Church of Craft. The winter Church of Craft class schedule is full of fabulous crafting opportunities, and the prices are unbeatable.

The newest yarn in the store is a big batch of handpainted wool/hemp blend from Dzined. The colors have to be seen in person -- web photos can't compare to the depth and glow the fiber has up close.

As always, please feel free to come hang out on Friday nights – that’s when the TGIF knitting group meets! Come whenever you get off work (any time after 5:30pm, and we knit until 9pm). I’m starting a new knitting group, too: the Bring the Baby knitting group is meeting on Thursday afternoons from 1-3pm. If you’ve wondered whether it’s okay to bring your baby to a knitting group, now you have the answer – go ahead!

The store is at 325 Gold Street, near the intersection of Flatbush and Myrtle.

Regular store hours are Wed-Fri, 12-9pm, and Sat-Sun, 12-6pm.
